For your consideration is an exceptional and historically consequential seventeenth-century bronze seal matrix attributable to Jean-Baptiste Budes, Comte de Gubriant (16021643), Marshal of France and one of the most prominent French military commanders of the Thirty Years War. Cast in bronze and engraved in intaglio, the circular die measures 34 mm in diameter and is mounted on an integral looped handle, bringing the overall height to 20 mm, with a weight of 28.88 grams. The face displays a finely cut quartered coat of arms within a beaded border, surrounded by a clear and fully legible Latin legend: SIGILLVM IOANNIS BVDES COMITIS DE GUEBRIANT (Seal of Jean Budes, Count of Gubriant). The entire device is engraved in reverse, as required for sealing, preserving the precision necessary for official wax impressions.

Gubriant occupies a distinguished place in French military history. A Breton nobleman in royal service under Louis XIII, he rose through the ranks during Frances intervention in the Thirty Years War, ultimately becoming one of the principal commanders of Franco-Weimarian forces operating within the Holy Roman Empire. His successes in the fieldmost notably at Wolfenbttel (1641) and Kempen (1642)secured important strategic gains for France and contributed directly to his elevation in 1642 to the rank of Marshal of France, one of the highest and most prestigious military honors in the kingdom, reserved for commanders of exceptional ability and proven loyalty to the Crown.
