Description:Arecent find from a one-of-a-kind historical collection of 1916 Democraticcampaign material in the State of Wisconsin. Despite the foxing,staining, water damage, and three tiny fold tears, this is a miraculouslypreserved thin paper campaign poster which was exclusively intended for singleusage. Even with the defects, this extraordinary piece could be restoredto perfect condition. It is folded twice and then affixed to the reverseside of a font page from the American Type Founders Company. There is noteven an image of this fantastic poster anywhere and it almost certainly is thesole surviving example. If not for a savvy individual in 1916, it wouldnever have been saved for American Political History. A magnificentDiscovery,Burt Williams ran unopposed in the 1916 Democratic Gubernatorial Primary andunfortunately ran up against Republican Incumbent Emanual Lorenz Philipp whoserved two terms as Wisconsin Governor. The motto printed under the fullportrait was “Public Interest First,” no doubt a direct reference to hisopponent’s multiple private sector interests also known as the companies heowned. The image of Burt Williams in this full portrait size is uniqueand was created by Fairbanks-Frey Engraving Company. Furthermore, the1916 Campaign Poster was printed by The Inland Printing Co., of Milwaukee,Wisconsin. Officially, this poster was Authorized and Published byDemocratic State Central Committee.
