Beautiful but partly distressed c.1900 antique French oriental four-piece hinged lacquered screen. Possibly from France or Indochina (Vietnam was a French territory then). Opened up it measures 7 feet high x ~64” wide, and made of wood veneer over wood framing, with “feet” or heels 2-1/2” high. Doors are about one inch thick.

Front gilded side is extraordinarily detailed for an Asian screen, due to French artistic influence. It features two examples of auspicious number nine symbolism, in the cranes and magnolia blossoms, with subtle shading for a depth effect. The old conifer tree is painted more Asian style with contour lines and leafy brushwork, again shaded for depth. Unusual for Asian art, it shows European influences.

Alas, though the front side is still in very good condition, the back shows much wear and some damage due to it being used as a room divider at a restaurant where I purchased it from years ago. The black lacquer and gold bamboo motifs are pitted off, including two gashes that do NOT come thru to the front, thank goodness. Veneer is slightly separated in a couple spots only.
