Measurements:
Frame: 33.75" inches wide by 27.75" inches tall
Photograph: 20.75" inches wide by 16.75" inches tallWilliam Henry Jacksonwas born in 1843 in Keeseville, New York, and passed away in 1942 in New York City at the age of 99. His mother was an artist and he too was an artist, explorer, Civil War Veteran, and the first person to photograph Yellowstone National Park before it was a National Park.
Jackson after schooling at age 16 moved to Rutland, Vermont to work for a photographerand later joined Company K of the 12th Vermont Infantry Regiment and fought in the Civil War at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was not much of a fighter, so they had him draw maps and daily life scenes.
Upon returning to Ruland, Vermont, he started coloring photos for the same photographer,he got engaged to a girl from Rutland, and then wasoffered $25 a week by a photographer coloring photos upin Burlington, so he moved to Burlington. Once a week, he would travel south to Rutland to be with his partner, one time there was a disagreement and thewedding was called off, ashamed and embarrassed, he decided he had to leave Vermont forever, and 24 hours later was on his way to New York City and eventually he headed out West.
He isone of the first to photograph the North American West, and his photos helped get the national parks in the American West established.
Jackson has works in the Museum of Modern Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and many more.
No photograph collection is complete without one of William Henry Jackson's Mammoth prints. The original gesso frame, does show signs of its age, it was made by and is signed by "Wm M Keightley", William M Keightley, was a wholesale and retail Bookseller, Stationer and News Dealer, who was also appointed the first Postmaster of Durango, Colorado on November 19, 1880, the same time the post office was established. I did find records in The American Stationer journal from March 22, 1883 that lista $1000 real estate mortgage in Durango, Colorado for Wm Keightley, for the purchase of the building for his book& stationery store. Mr. Keightley finally sold his book & stationery business to a 10 year employee of his, H. M. West and his copartner TE Bowman, forming West & Bowman in 1893. At that time they were still the only book and stationery store in Durango, Colorado. Please see the detailed photos, this is the exact Photograph you will receive when you win!
