Pennsylvania buys a horse for the state's army.
Partly Printed Document Signed: "Andrew Doz Commiss for procuring supplies for the Army", 1p, 7½x3¼. Philadelphia, 1780 June 23. In full: "I do hereby certify that the State of Pennsylvania is indebted to Michael Walman in the sum of One thousand Dollars, being for a Horse which sum by contract became due to the said Michael Walman the tenth day of June for provisions supplied the Army, pursuant to An Act of Assembly passed the 1st of June, 1780." On verso is Autograph Document Signed: "Jn. Nicholson". Comptroller General Office, 1786 March 18. In full: "Settled the within account amounting to Six pounds five Shillings State money." JOHN NICHOLSON, Comptroller General of Pennsylvania, was later involved with former Signer of the Declaration of Independence Robert Morris in unsuccessful land speculation that resulted in Morris spending three years in debtors' prison. Before the war, ANDREW DOZ had served as Philadelphia City Assessor. Browned, silked. Page has hardened from the silking and is very stiff. Vertical fold had separated but the silking has repaired it. The fold touches the "A" in Andrew. Show through of ink from verso. Soiled.
