Business card format photograph (cdv) by Nadar.
Format: 6.40 x 10.40 cm.
Vintage albumen print. Summer 1862.
Extraordinary and rare shot of the poet, standing, hands in pockets.
This photograph was taken during the summer of 1862 in Nadar’s mythical studio at 35 boulevard des Capucines in Paris.
"Seeing this ever-singular head, flaring from the invariably rolled-up hopper’s collar, vigorously curled nose between two eyes that we hadn’t forgotten: two drops of coffee—tight and bitter lips, bad, silver hair before age, sometimes too short, sometimes too long, hairless face, clerically shaved—the seized passerby, as if worried, thought, 'That’s not everyone. » »
Félix Nadar, Charles Baudelaire intimate : The Virgin Poet.
Although initially reluctant to photographic invention (""From that moment on, filthy society rushed, like one Narcissus, to contemplate his trivial image on metal. An extraordinary madness, fanaticism took hold of all these new sun worshippers. » - Salon de 1859.) Baudelaire, aware of the importance of the process, allowed himself to be "seized" by the lens on several occasions." His friend Nadar first photographed him in 1855.
Only fifteen different photographic portraits of the poet are known, made between 1855 and 1866 over seven separate sessions: three at Nadar's, three at Etienne Carjat's, and one at Charles Neyt's in Brussels.
Baudelaire and Nadar met in 1843 and their friendship lasted until the poet's death in 1867. The photographer made a total of seven portraits of his friend between 1855 and 1862. The two men, full of admiration for each other, paid moving tributes in their respective works : Baudelaire dedicated a poem from the Flowers of Evil 'The dream of a curious » to the portraitist who dedicated to him a work entitled Charles Baudelaire intimate : The Virgin Poet (1911).
