BACKGROUND: The Ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry Battalion was a historic African American unit commanded by Major Charles Young that trained at Camp Alger, Virginia, during the Spanish-American War in the summer of 1898. They served as the headquarters guard for General William M. Graham.
