Jimi Hendrix
In 2022, Montblanc honours one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century who is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music: Jimi Hendrix.
As an homage to his legendary performance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival and his distinctive style of playing the guitar the other way around, this Limited Edition features a reversed mechanism: The Au 750 solid white gold cap top serves as the cone while the lacquered barrel holds the Au750 solid white gold forepart. The "cap", made from precious lacquer, is embellished by a Au 750 solid white gold application featuring the setlist of the songs Hendrix played at Woodstock Festival. The palladium-coated clip is angled to resemble the vibrato bar of an electric guitar.
The handcrafted Au 750 solid gold nib bears a portrait of Jimi Hendrix.
Jimi Hendrix - guitar god
Widely recognised as one of the most creative and influential musicians of the 20th century, Jim Hendrix reimagined the possibilities of the electric guitar.
The career of James Marshall Jim' Hendrix (born 1942) spanned just four years, but that brief time was enough to immortalise his genius with out-of-this-world sounds and his sophisticated technical skill.
Revered as a guitar god, he rose to fame in the 1960s rock 'n' roll culture, revolutionisingthe music world along the way.
Fuelled by top-selling albums and many legendary concerts, the Seattle-born Jimi Hendrix blasted every convention out of the room. The guitar seemed to be an extension of his body.
He commanded every stage and played his guitar with his teeth, between his legs, behind his head and on his back.
He coaxed almost-never-before-heard noises from the instrument, improvised guitar solos that went on for minute after sublime minute and proclaimed the message of peace and love with his music.
The Montblanc Great Characters Jim Hendrix Limited Edition 99 is dedicated to the music idol of an entire generation.
The limitation to 99 pieces refers to the 30th anniversary of Woodstock in 1999, when Hendrix's posthumous albumLive at Woodstockwas released.
The rise to triumph
The road to rock guitar virtuosity began for Jimi Hendrix in humble circumstances.
He taught himself notes and riffs by copying songs from the radio with a $5 right-handed guitar flipped over, restrung and played left-handed.
In 1966, he was discovered in a tiny Greenwich Village nightclub by Animals bassist Chas Chandler, who encouraged him to come to London.
Once there, he formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience with drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding.
His adaptation of 'Hey Joe' captured the imagination of fans in Britain and Europe.
Their concerts snowballed into a sensation. The young Jimi took the music world by storm.
Even guitar legends like Eric Clapton were speechless when Jim Hendrix got up on stage and drove his cream-coloured Fender Stratocaster to new heights with his inventive and unconventional technique.
The Limited Edition 99 is inspired by the Woodstock Festival in 1969, one of the pivotal concerts in [imi Hendrix's career, as well as the electric guitar, the instrument that gave voice to his musical vision.
Cream-coloured lacquer is used on the cap to reflect the look of the Fender Stratocaster he played at Woodstock, while an engraved Au 750 solid white gold plaque bears the names of the songs in his Woodstock set.
Barrier breaker with six strings
Jimi Hendrix's musical range was enormous and broke all the rules.
He moved easily among rock, blues, jazz and soul, making his electric guitar sing, howl and purr.
He maximised the potential of the wah-wah tone control pedal and his guitar's vibrato bar, establishing them as critical components of his sound.
Anything that was perceived as disruptive and dissonant, he elevated to an art form.
Hendrix integrated response, frequency overlays and distortion into his explosive sound fireworks and melded the lead and rhythm parts in a manner that gave him and the instrument a new expressive power.
Hendrix's ability to reinvent music and sound, as well as his habit of turning right-handed guitars around to play left-handed, inspired a functional reinvention of this writing instrument: instead of removing the cap to reveal the nib, one unscrews the barrel to write.
As a result, what appears to be the cap top actually serves as the cone, and vice versa.
The tremolo bar that Hendrix used so expressively to create his soul-stirring sound inspired the shape of the palladium-coated clip, which is covered in precious resin at the tip.
The burning guitar
One of Jimi Hendrix's most sensational performances was at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, the 'Summer of Love'.
Jimi had been recommended to the festival producers by Paul McCartney.
His brilliant performance, which was also his US debut, lasted just 45 minutes, stunned the Monterey audience and propelled him to fame in his home country.
Many of his signature songs, like Foxey Lady' and Purple Haze', were part of that incredible set.
The high point came during an intense interpretation of Wild Thing, when he concluded this astounding performance by setting his Fender Stratocaster guitar on fire.
The Monterey audience was left stunned.
The cap top of the Limited Edition 99 pays tribute to the Summer of Love' with a skeletonised Au 750 solid white gold overlay carved out with the peace sign and the Montblanc emblem to reveal the blue transparent dome underneath.
In 1969, just two summers after his success in Monterey, Hendrix once again bewitched music lovers at a festival whose name continues to reverberate through history: Woodstock.
The lacquer ring beneath the dome is inspired by the hot pink headband Hendrix wore on stage that August day in New York state. In commemoration of one of Hendrix's greatest concerts, the name 'Woodstock' is imprinted around the top of the clip.
Virtuosic, perfect and multilayered: Electric Ladyland
Jimi Hendrix was a perfectionist.
He thrilled audiences at his live performances with a fascinating combination of virtuosic technical skill and a dynamic stage presence.
When recording in the studio, he concentrated exclusively on achieving the perfect tone and effect.
That was especially true of his 1968 studio album Electric Ladyland - a milestone of rock music.
When making this album, he was known to play up to 50 takes of a single song before he was happy with the result.
In this double album, Hendrix united his abilities as guitar player, singer, songwriter and producer, from the experimental opening And the Gods Made Love' to the jazz feel of 'Rainy Day, Dream Away', the New Orleans blues of 'Come On (Let The Good Times Roll)' and the psychedelic sounds of Voodoo Child (Slight Return)'.
Hendrix loved experimenting with sound effects using the wah-wah pedal - an electronic device used to manipulate the sound of an electric guitar.
His passionate experimentation with electronic sound finds expression in the surface of the Au 750 solid white gold cap ring, which is criss-crossed to resemble the connecting end of a Fender guitar cable.
The date of the Woodstock concert, 18-08-1969, is also engraved on the cap ring.
Continuing the colour scheme of Hendrix's outft at Woodstock, the barrel is decorated in blue lacquer with a degradé effect, and the Au 750 solid white gold cone is inlaid in blue at the tip.
Woodstock and the Jimi Hendrix legend
Woodstock was one of the greatest open-air rock concerts and the embodiment of the hippie mantra of 'love and peace'.
In the summer of 1969, 400,000 people gathered peacefully for three days, united for love and against war.
The festival culminated in a highly anticipated appearance by Jimi Hendrix.
Because of weather and logistical delays, Hendrix took to the stage on Monday morning of 18 August 1969, when the festival should have been long over.
The unforgettable image of him performing in a white fringe jacket, blue flares and a pink silk scarf worn as a headband cemented his image as guitar god and flower power icon in one person.
When his hit song 'Voodoo Child' spontaneously transitioned into the American national anthem, his fans experienced a transcendent moment in music history.
Using raw response and distortion, Hendrix interpreted the anthem like no one before him, recasting it for the Woodstock audience - and the millions who would later see the dramatic footage of his performance - as an appeal to the world for peace.
The portrait engraved on the handcrafted Au 750 solid bi-colour gold nib honours one of the greatest guitarists of the 20th century. The Au 750 solid white gold forepart is engraved with his signature alongside the same geometric pattern that decorated Hendrix's guitar strap at Woodstock.
