1986 Boston Marathon Winner Game/Race Used Water Bottle by Rob de Castella Rare:

History: I recovered this hydration bottle myself on the race course after the elite race leaders had passed our viewing spot on Patriots Day, 1986. I was in sixth grade at the time and out of school and our Dad liked to take us to the Boston Marathon if he was able. My dad was (and still is) a huge Boston sports fan was also into running so we went several consecutive years in the 1980s. I believe we were at Heartbreak Hill in 1986 as that was our usual viewing spot if parking was available. My dad recognized the bottle as De Castella's immediately when I showed it to him as he knew his nickname and he was a favorite to win that year. I brought the bottle into show and tell the next day at school and was a hit as De Castella had gone on to win and the race is a big deal in the Boston area.
I would assume this bottle was one of several (perhaps with some nutrition mix instead of straight water) given to De Castella along the course by a support team. My guess is that there may have originally been as many as 10 of these (a professional distance racer of the era would know better how many would have been given to him in a typical race), but I doubt any have survived to 2025 outside of this one. It is labeled "Nos1" and if it was discarded at Heartbreak hill that may give some insight into how many existed. After bringing it to school I carefully stored the bottle for decades but the yellow athletic tape is beginning to fall off now as the adhesive is finally failing. Not sure how a preservationist would approach stabilizing it but I would imagine it would make sense for a professional to reattach the tape. It has been kept out of sunlight which has preserved the color and avoided fading to the bottle, tape or writing.
I would be happy to write up a more formal letter to document its authenticity and give more biographical information to tie it and myself to that Marathon day in 1986 if asked. It's a unique item and it is rare to own something that was used in a historic sporting event by a champion, particularly in a sport as ephemeral as distance running.
