This is a super rare if not unique Ford food serving tray. It measures 12" tall by 17-1/2" wide and about 1/2" deep. Judging by the famous Ford V8 logo, this was made around 1936. It was stamped from stainless steel sheet material that was highly polished for the top surface and left with a mill finish on the bottom surface.
This great piece came from a recent sale in the middle of the country. Until I correspond with someone who owns or has seen one of these, and knows a lot about them, I will have to assume this gem was a prototype rather than a production item. PLEASE let me know if you have one of these food trays or know more about them. I am a history nut and enjoy learning about historical items like this.
The third photo of this listing shows this tray loaded with hospital food. I am with my mother who is dying at a hospital so I used some of her food to load this tray for that photo. I believe this tray has more compartments that most similar food trays have.
I suspect this tray either came from or was intended to be used at a cafeteria at some Ford production plant. I also suspect that trays like this one were not produced because they would show unsightly utensil scratches so easily. If similar trays were produced, I suspect they were made from material that had a dull mill finish like the bottom of this tray has.
This beauty would make a great item to display with your favorite early Ford V8 vehicle. It could be used as a tie breaker at a highly competitive car show. It would also look great inside a frame hanging on your office or garage wall. It would also look right at home in a display case filled with automobilia items.
Owning a tray like this one may be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
