The belowlisted items consist of 11 gelatin dry glass plates negativestaken circa 1880’s (the positivescanswere obtained from thenegatives).

Thenegatives provide views of Sri Lanka(at the time Ceylon) attributed to the the oldest photographicstudio in operation in the world, Bourne& Shepherd (1863-present), led by thephotographers Samuel Bourne (1834-1912) and Charles Shepherd (fl. 1858-1878). We have alsolisted on a group of glass plates of India by Bourne & Shepherd (several signed).

The present plates are apparently pirated copies taken circa1880’s from original prints most likely by an amateur for small scale reprinting.
