Sister Emily Margaret Whitemanwas born in Lamport,Northamptonshire on 22/1/1869, the daughter of William and Emma Whiteman. Shetrained as a nurse at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Rochester, Kent between1890-94, she was appointed Head Nurse on a Ward by the end of her time there.Following this she served a Sister at Yarmouth from 1894 and joined thePrincess Christian's Army Nursing Service Reserve, based at Windsor in 1896.

With the outbreak of the Second Boer War, she was mobilisedfor service and arrived in South Africa on 4/11/1899. She was posted to No. 3General Hospital at Kroondstat before joining No. 12 Hospital, also based atKroonstat. Taking some leave, she returned to South Africa on 22/2/1902 and waslater posted to St Helena (Boer P.O.W's) from 27/5/902. She returned to Britainfor leave on 9/10/1902, where she terminatined her engagement on 9/11/1902.Whiteman was awarded a gratuity of £60-5-6 on the cessation of employment andwas invested with the Royal Red Cross on 18/11/1902.

She was appointed a Queens Nurse on 1/7/1903.

On the outbreak of the Great War she was re-called for dutyin August 1914 and deployed to France in 1914. Her MIC and 1914 Star rollrecords landing on 11th August however her service records show she wasmobilised on the 12th August.

Posted to No. 6 General Hospital (Rouen) she served hereuntil 10/11/1915, when she returned to Britain. Leaving Liverpool on 2/12/1915for Salonika, via Alexandria, arriving on 1/2/1916. Served there for much ofthe war she embarked on 23/5/1918 and returned to Britain, via Taranto,arriving on 2/6/1918. Here she was granted five weeks leave before joining aHome Station at Colchester. There, with the war over, she applied for atransfer to the Army Occupation in Germany, this was denied, and Whiteman wasdemobilized on 31/7/1919. She was removed from the Permanent Reserve Role as aresult of attaining the age limit on 19/1/1925, with her final report stating:

'A very goodconscientious nurse, much liked by all. Conduct excellent.'

In civilianlife she was employed with the Whittlsey District Nursing Association. Workingfor over 31 years commencing on her return from South Africa in 1903, sheretired in 1934. She never married and died in Peterborough in 1953.
